Esta obra constitui uma peça histórica sobre a guerra desencadeada pela resistência angolana contra a presença da administração e exército de Portugal que colonizaram Angola durante cerca de 500 anos.

"The Angolan insurgency against mossbacked Portuguese imperialism has been limping or rather stumbling along for more than ten years now, a hand-to-gun operation overshadowed on the world scene by Vietnam, undercut by lack of modern arms and needed escudoes, slowed by guerrilla lassitude and lack of finesse, and stymied by Portuguese helicopter power (acquired from the U.S.), reprisal massacres, use of napalm, etc. Unfortunately the material assembled here by journalists Barnett and Harvey -- the first (1956) manifesto of the Movimento Popular de Libertacao de Angola (MPLA), radio addresses by Agostinho Neto (MPLA president), two newspaper articles by the authors, several long MPLA guerrilla life histories, an MPLA report to the UN Committee on Decolonization -- is more distinguishable as propaganda than solid political analysis; the revolutionary struggle is puffed up while its shortcomings are glossed over or suffused in popular slogans. The life histories do contain some hard information re native mores and the local roots of the conflict, but this is not enough to save the book from myopic partisanship."
