SINOPSE: 

“A guerra civil de Angola tem sido a mais longa e sangrenta da África. O que antes era um conflito por procuração entre as superpotências da Guerra Fria se tornou um conflito étnico aparentemente sem fim. Enquanto os líderes políticos lutam para controlar as imensas reservas de diamantes e petróleo do país, os angolanos comuns foram apanhados no fogo cruzado de um quarto de século de conflito. 

Houve muitos livros escritos sobre Angola, seja por sul-africanos ou por autores que favoreceram e/ou defenderam o envolvimento da África do Sul. Maier, através de olhos imparciais, registra talvez a visão mais clara. 

Em 1992, o país deveria, sob os auspícios da ONU, realizar sua primeira eleição democrática - mas tudo deu errado. Jonas Savimbi, da UNITA, rejeitou a sua derrota. Pik Botha, por muitos anos um dos maiores defensores de Savimbi, foi a Angola para ajudar a trazer paz ao país. 

A UNITA deve muito de sua força militar atual a Pretória, assim como o MPLA tinha uma enorme dívida com os cubanos e a antiga União Soviética. Os esforços diplomáticos de Botha não foram mais bem-sucedidos do que os de outros mantenedores da paz internacionais e a comunidade diplomática eventualmente negociou um novo, embora frágil, acordo de paz. 

Cético em relação às promessas e mentiras de ambos os lados sobre a paz, Maier escreveu um relato envolvente do conflito em uma das zonas de guerra mais trágicas, porém menos compreendidas, do mundo.”
