“After World War I the former German colony of South West Africa became a mandate of South Africa. Since then, in spite of a World Court decision and United Nations resolutions, Namibia, as it is now called, is still subject to the merciless exploitation of its South African rulers.
In ‘BATTLEFRONT NAMÍBIA’, John Ya-Otto tells his personal story of involvement in the fight against South African domination of his country. He describes the conflict that pits a black Namibian’s aspirations for himself and his people against their white South African masters. An indimitable rebel, much like Malcolm X, Ya-Otto refuses to How and scrape for the whites, refuses to take the place allotted to him in the miserable shantytowns ringing the cities. His definace earns him lots of abuse, including fourteen months of imorisonment in Pretória and torture to the point of death.
An intelligent, sensitive person, a School teacher and a recognized leader among Namibia tribes, he wants, initially, no nore than an opposrtunity to work as a teacher in the community which raised him. But after witnessing the Windhoek Massacre in 1959, Ya-Otto becomes engaged in the fledgling  South Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO). Here he meets others who will be leaders, someday, of a independent Namibia. As they spread their message, the secret police are hot on their heels. As SWAPO grows, tension mounts. Ya-Otto and his comrades soon find they must deal with the whites on their own brutal terms.
Ya-Otto’s story is a personal - and at Times deeply emotional - account of dramatic contemporay events. His is a close-up study of the black political movements contesting white minority rule in southern Africa - a story that is front-page news today, and will continue to be for several years to come.
John Ya-Otto is at present minister of labour in the SWAPO governement in exile, which is based in Mozambique.“
