Working in Mozambique for FIVE years when the country was shunned by much of the Western world, the author observed the resilience of a people who, almost since independence from the Portuguese in 1975 had brought the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) to power, had suffered a vicious destabilisation campaign by the Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO). Her work in the control of malarial mosquitoes had taken her on short visits to the provinces from the capital, Maputo, but it was only after the signing of the October 1992 Rome Peace Accord between FRELIMO and RENAMO that overland travel throughout the country was considered safe. 

‘VIVA MOZAMBIQUE’ is an affectionate look at life in the capital with her Mozambique and Soviet colleagues and the story of her journey overland to every province of the country when peace was restored, but before the 1994 elections returned FRELIMO to power. Having been a victim or the urban crime which increased as the countryside became safer, Sally Crook gladly took to the road with the refugees returning tho their villages and discovered the enthusiasm with which they uncomplainingly tried to reclaim their old way of life.“
