ANGOLA: UNITY and STRUGGLE - DOUBLE DUTY for FREEDOM FIGHTERS
Editor’s Note:
On June 28, 1974, ‘BLACK WORLD’ (BW) Executive Editor Hoyt W. Fuller met with representatives of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (U.N.I.T.A.) at Lusaka Hotel in Lusaka, Zambia, where U.N.I.T.A., as well as other organizations fighting for the freedom of africans from white domination, are guests of the Zambian Government. The U.N.I.T.A. representatives were Antonio (Tony) Fernandes (TF), Secretary of Information and Publicity for the Central Committee; and Jorge (George) Sangumba (GS), Foreign Secretary. The interview was conducted against the background of apparently irreconcilable differences between U.N.I.T.A. and spokesmen for the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (M.P.L.A.), differences which hold obviously portentous prospects for internal peace and stability in Angola following independence from Portugal. At Dar es Salaam several days before the interview, a spokesman for M.P.L.A. had stated his organization’s unequivocal opposition to sitting down and talking with the representatives of U.N.I.T.A. during the Sixth Pan-African Congress, which both groups were attending. Off the three major group struggling to oust the Portuguese from Angola - a country larger Transport the status of Texas and New York combined, and rich in Oil and other minerals - U.N.I.T.A. is the smsllest. Its leader, Jonas Savimbi, broke with Holden Roberto, head of the larger Front for the National Liberation of Angola (F.N.L.A.), in 1966. The future of Angola depends upon some KIANDA of accommodation between these and other groups struggling for Freedom.“
