SINOPSE:
“A new edition of ‘THE NATURAL HISTORY OF INHACA ISLANDI, Mozambique’ has been prepared by past and present biologists at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Maputo. The book has been entirely rewritten and enlarged. The species list has been updated by specialists and the results of over 20 years of research on aspects of tropical marine biology relating to the inhabitants of the shores and dunes are included in the book. The flora should be of particular interest because of the successful regeneration of the coastal bush and forests on abandoned farmlands on some of the eastern and western dunes which were declared protected areas 25 years ago. Introductory chapters explain the environmental basis for the dominance of tropical life on the island and the characteristic features of tropical shores. The fauna and flora of the shores are fully detailed in the following eight chapters. Descriptions of the flora and fauna of the land have been extended to include one chapter each on vegetation; birds; amphibians, reptiles and mammals; insects; snails; freshwater diatoms. The ‘1990 United Nations Development Plan for Inhaca Island’ which is based on the biological research of the Universidade in Maputo is described the final chapter. The book is written for students and the general reader. It is illustrated with drawings and diagrams of common organisms, accompanied by descriptions so as to facilitate recognition of flora and fauna in the field.”
