“ ‘ANGOLA - FIVE CENTURIES OF CONFLICT’
By Lawrence W. Henderson
Angola occupies a strategic positivos in volatile southern Africa. This book is a concise and informative survey of its history and politics from the fifteenth century to the present, weitten by a man who served as a missionary in Angola for over twenty years.
For the past 500 years Angola has seen ceaseless conflict. Recognition of this fact, Lawrence Henderson maintains, is essential for an understanding of the war of liberation in 1961-1974 and the current struggle among rival political movements. After describing Angola’s natural environment, ethnolinguistic groups, and daily life, he surveys the history of the slave trade, the transition from slavery to colonialism, and developments in the colonial period, when Portugal exercised direct control over the entire country. He explains how political independence came about as a result of the clash between Angolan and Portuguese nationalist elements and internal discord within each group, and he atributos the unending strife in Angola to ethnolinguistic divisions and to the continuing confrontativo between European and Africa cultures. These dynamic forces, he says, will continue to affect Angola whatever the fale of particular political leaders or parties.
Based on mano years personal experience in Angola, this timely and attractively written book will enable a better understanding of a complex society.”
