‘SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE - The twentieth century mercenary’
By Peter Macdonald
“Since time immemorial mercenaries have been thought of as the unruly and violent ‘dogs of war’ who go where the action is to reap the bloody spoils of battle. Yet mercenaries throughout history have fought alongside regular professionals in campaigns across the world, differing in nationality but often sharing a common ideology.

‘SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE’ tells the story of those more recent campaigns and the mercenaries of all races who fought in them: from the foreign nationals who served with the nazi SS, through the postcolonial conflicts streching across Europe to Africa and the Far East, to the wars in Southeast Asia, Central America and Afghanistan. It also chronicles the lives of some of the more colorful characters involved, such as the notorious ‘Black Jack’ Schramme and the eccentric German aristocrat von Rosen - the firts man to fly a Red Cross plane into Ethiopia after the italian invasion of 1935. It also describes in vivid detail how men become mercenaries in the firts place and how they recruited and trained in special camps.

It may be fashionable to despise mercenaries rather than honor them - as happened in ancient times - but their ruthless professional skills are likely to be exploited as much in the future as they have been in the past, whether by govermments, rebel bands or unscrupulous international businessmen.

As long as such people exist, says the author of ‘SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE’ - and there is nothing to indicate that they are a dying breed - mercenaries will be found playing their fleeting part in the world’s trouble spots.

The author:
“Peter Macdonald is a well-known photographic jornalista specializing in war and the military. After serving as an officier in the British Army, he went to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where he trained government troops fighting nationalist guerrillas. He now lives in London.“
