O Autor e o Livro:
“ ‘PORTUGAL: The Last Empire’ by Neil Bruce
On 25 April 1974 there was a fairly successful and almost bloodless military coup in Lisbon. In less than thirty hours an apparently solid, monolithic regime, which had seemed impregnable and at least tolerably popular, had collapsed with hardly a voice raised in its support.
It was the end of an era end of Portugal’s ‘New State’, constructed and symbolised by Dr. Salazar and continued in modified from by Dr. Caetano, which had lasted for over forty years. The Army had raised power once again - but this was a different section of the army, apparently with massive public support both inside the armed forces and in the country at large (or at least in the main towns). It was a revolt by regular army captains and majors against What they saw as an out-of-date ‘fascist’ system. It was a revolta against the colonial guerrilla wars which had been going on in Portuguese Africa for over thirteen years. And it was a revolt led by the radical younger element in the military establishment, who rejected the old regime and brought in the longoutlawed Portuguese Communist and Socialist parties and their exiled leaders. It was also the beginning of the end of Europe’s oldest colonial empire and of a possibly unique social and political esperiment.
This is a short story of the things that led to a startling revolution in Portugal and in Portuguese Africa, which is still going on. It is also a brief study of the Portugal that Salazar created and of the man who epitomised the rebellion: the monocled General Spínola who was later to fall from grace. It is a study of the real origins of the 25 April coup and of the man who engineered it. “
