“BEATRIX HEINTZE é alemã e foi investigadora no Instituto Frobenius em Frankfurt am Main entre 1969 e 2004. Para além da publicação e divulgação de fontes, as suas pesquisas centram-se na história e na antropologia da África Centro-Ocidental, na história do saber científico e em questões metodológicas. Publicou numerosos estudos históricos e antropológicos, entre os quais se destacam as obras Fontes para a História de Angola do Século XVII (1985 e 1988).”

“Beatrix Heintze studied ethnology, Romance languages and literature, history, ancient history and philosophy in Munich and received her doctorate in 1968 with a thesis on "Possession Phenomena in the Middle Bantu Region." After several fellowships (1968/69 from the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon and 1966/67, 1969/70 from the German Research Foundation), she was a research associate at the Frobenius Institute from May 1970 to February 2004. Here she functioned primarily as editor (after the death of the Institute's director, Eike Haberland, also as publisher) of the Institute's journal Paideuma (volumes 1971 - 1997) and of the monograph series "Studien zur Kulturkunde" (volumes 28 to 120 and 122; from 1992 also as editor, then as co-editor with the Institute's new director, Karl-Heinz Kohl). In 1995 she founded her own small series at the Institute, "Afrika-Archiv," reserved for editing sources. Its purpose is to provide less privileged scholars with access to sources that can only be consulted at great expense in time and money or are in private hands. She herself has edited several important European sources on the history and ethnography of Angola in the 17th and 19th centuries. Her own research and publications, based on intensive studies in Portuguese and German archives, are particularly concerned with the history and ethnology of West Central Africa, historical research methods, and the history of science.

Dr. Beatrix Heintze was elected a corresponding member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences in Lisbon in 2008. She has been honored for her scientific work on the history and ethnology of Lusophone Africa.“
