“ ‘ANGOLA - THE REAL STORY’ - By Dr. P. K. Huibregtse
The name ‘Angola’ calls up associations.
The country is generally considered to be an extremely dark part of Africa, where there is forced labour, where slavery still exists, where very little education is offered and the medical services are bad; where the black population is exploited, where a fierce struggle rages to gain independence, where the people suffer as a result of discrimination and downright terror. In short, a country where colonialism reigns in the worts possible sense.
These are the ideas the world has about Angola, and the question is: ‘Is the picture correct ? Can it be possible that, in the second half of the twentieth century, a nation, a government, of a civilized Western country can really be so unrealistic, that it refuses to consider or to meet halfway justified, that it was no understanding of development and progress, no feeling for the demands of the time?’
The Duch scholar, Dr. P. K. Huibregtse who was travelled widely in Africa, and who has become an expert on African affairs, visited the portuguese overseas province Angola a number of times and made a study of the local situation. He has Laís down his impressions in this book, which he has subtitled, ‘THE REAL STORY’.
How different are the factos that he discribes from what is generally alleged! There is a well-developed system of education, exceptionally good medical services, excellent social measures and care is the taken of the young and of the old. Racial discrimination is unknown and there are equal rights for the whites and the blacks. Moreover, Angola is experiencing sound Economical development and growth. Apart from this development according to Western standards, there is also Angola still unspoilt Africa with exotic, primitive tribes, very beatutuful landscapes, lush vegetation, rare animals. All this is described in this book, that will be a revelarion for the many, who have no idea of the real situation in this contentious country, nor of the reason why it is so contentious !“
